What makes the matchbook scene an excellent scene to evaluate is the large number of various film techniques that are used to portray its meaning and message. The scene, located towards the end of the film, creates a rising action to climatic level of suspense in the overall storyline of the film. Thorough the use of filming techniques, the story and the director’s message unfold through the eyes of the characters and the angle of the camera. Hitchcock’s desired message and the scene’s overall meaning can be revealed by breaking down the various techniques used in its creation. Mise-en-scene is a term that is used to describe the general effect by encompassing everything from content and lighting, to camera angle and frame. The use and definition of mise-en-scene is not completely agreed upon, but what cannot be disputed is what Hitchcock places in his scenes. Potentially the most used technique in the creation of the matchbook warning scene is the medium shot. The medium shot incorporates most of the potential visual media, leaving out some closer detail and distant effect (Class Notes 1/16/13). Not using the full space as often and keeping a closer medium shot with the characters achieves a greater sense of intimacy and closeness, while still keeping the action and actors on the screen. Although used far less than the medium shot, in an effort to place importance on key parts of a scene, a zoomed in shot that shows the detail of something specific will be used in what is called a close-up shot (Kolker 60). In the scene being evaluated a close-up shot is used early on when Thornhill is writing his note to Eve Kendall on the inside cover of a matchbook. The close-up shot shows the audience a more detailed version of what Thornhill is seeing and places an emphasis on its importance by making it virtually the only thing visible. In drawing this special attention toward the note, and the warning of danger that the note represents, the close-up shot draws the audience in more and establishes the thrill of suspense With the use of non-diegetic sound, sound that operates outside of the knowledge of the characters on the screen, an effective sense of suspense and rising action can be more thoroughly enjoyed (Class Notes 1/23/13). In this particular scene the well placed soundtrack, at the opening and ending of the scene, is what makes the creation of suspense so successful. At the beginning of the scene when Roger is outside of the house climbing to the second story, the music maintains a constant building feeling. At the end of the scene where Eve is slowly being walked down the runway the music begins again creating the same feeling of rising suspense and making the viewer question what is to come of her and Rogers desperate situation. Shortly after the soundtrack cuts out in the scene and the audience is left in silence, the visuals become the only and most important form of message portrayal. The end of the audio is also not the end of created suspense in this scene. Roger Thornhill throws his inscribed matchbook down in hopes to reach Eve, but instead misses and lands it on the floor in front of her. This scene is where the use of shot-reverse shot becomes so essential. Shot-reverse shot is where a visual connection is made between a character and what they are viewing by cutting back and forth between shots of those two aspects (Kolker 47). This important method creates a heightened sense of suspense as the camera intercuts between Thornhill’s reactions and looks of concern, to his matchbook as it is found, picked up, and then placed into an ashtray by Vandammes assistant. The cutting back and forth allows he viewer to see almost simultaneously the reactions and actions of different characters in different locations. In the portion of the scene where Eve and Vandamme have begun drinking their champagne, just after roger has Roger has begun to view them from the second floor, they are shown at a more unusual angle. This unusual perspective is portrayed through use of a high-angle shot. A high-angle shot is simply a camera angle that is above where the eye would normally see (Class Notes 1/18/13). The reasoning behind using a high angle shot in this part of the scene is to show Thornhill’s perspective as he peers down from the second floor of the house. A camera placed on the first floor would better show Vandamme and Eve, but it would not create the illusion of viewing them through Thornhills eyes on the second floor. Through use of techniques like the high-angle shot, close-up shot, etc. Hitchcock is not just telling the story he wishes to tell, but rather showing it to the audience through the characters eyes. When up close and personal with the scenes, the action seems more real, and only further increases when aspects such as non-diegetic sound and shot-reverse shot are used specifically to exaggerate and accent the suspense he wishes to portray on the screen.

Embedded within this story of a group of young boys struggling to survive alone on a deserted island are insights to the capacity of evil within the human soul and how it can completely destroy society. After a plane crash that results in their inhabitation of the island, the boys establish a democratic society that thrives on order, necessity, and unity. Slowly, however, the peaceful society that they create shatters through a path of hatred, disrespect, murder, and the release of the true human soul. Upon a desolate tropical island, the lost boys begin to organize themselves to gain a sense of stability, order, and brotherhood. They elect Ralph, the oldest boy at twelve years of age, as leader and use a conch found in the lagoon as a symbol of democracy and respect. Two other children, Jack, the head of a choir group, and Simon, a small but intellectual boy, accompany Ralph on an expedition to determine whether the land is truly an island. They find that it is indeed true, and compose a plan to light a fire on the beach to create smoke; their only hope of rescue. The poem that I'll be analyzing in this commentary is called ‘Dad' by Elaine Feinstein. This poem is an emotional and lyrical poem in which the author is reflecting and recalling upon the memories of her deceased father. The main tones that are portrayed in this poem are sorrow, lovingness and mournfulness, and one way in which this is portrayed is through the methodology in which the poem is read, which is in a slow rhythmic speech and enjambment since it is a free verse poem. The author’s intentions behind this poem are clear. She is simply portraying her loving feelings for her father and the grief that she undergoes through his decease.She shows her intentions through the loving lines and sentimental memories, for example in lines 1-3 â€Å"Those black fat raisins you like to press into my palm from your soft heavy hands† the author recalls such simple yet meaningful memories with great detail which shows that she valued the memories dearly. Signs of grief are shown from when the she moans about her father, such as in lines 12-14 when she says, â€Å"Beached: cold, white-faced, shivering. What happened, old bull, my loyal hoarse-voiced warrior? †; In these lines, Elaine uses diction to prove a stronger point .As well as that, Elaine uses lots of imagery throughout this poem, such as in that last quote and in lines 4-6 â€Å"I see you staggering back up the path with sacks of potatoes from some local farm, fresh eggs, flowers. †; This quote however also shows how dearly she loved her father. Imagery is an effective poetic device for this poem since it generates/creates an emotional connection for the audience/reader making her message clearer. As well as imagery, the author uses many different poetic devices, for example in lines 13-14 when she says â€Å"Beached: cold, white-faced, shivering.What happened, old bull, my loyal hoarse-voiced warrior? † she is using a metaphor and comparing her father to a bull, which is a courageous and strong animal. With this metaphor, Elaine is portraying how dearly she loved her father and how he was a â€Å"bull† in her eyes. As well as that in lines 5-6 when Elaine says â€Å"Farm, fresh eggs, flowers† the author uses alliteration to evokes emotion and the pleasing tone of alliteration then catches the reader’s attention before telling the audience about her father’s death â€Å"Every day I grieve† at the end of line 6.

Delores Tucker Tucker was born Cynthia Delores Nottage on October 4, 1927 in Philadelphia. Her father, the Reverend Whitfield Notttage was an immigrant from the Bahamas and her mother, Captilda was a devout Christian and feminist.   Tucker was the tenth of thirteen children. After graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls, Tucker attended Temple University, majoring in finance and real estate. Following her graduation, Tucker attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. In 1951, Tucker married William â€Å"Bill† Tucker. The couple worked in real estate and insurance sales together. Tucker was involved in local NAACP efforts and other civil rights organizations throughout her life. During the 1960s Tucker was appointed as an officer of a local office of the national civil rights organization. Working with activist Cecil Moore, Tucker fought to end racist employment practices in Philadelphia’s post office and construction departments. Most notably, in 1965 Tucker organized a delegation from Philadelphia to participate in the Selma to Montgomery march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a result of Tucker’s work as a social activist, by 1968, she was appointed as chair of the Pennsylvania Black Democratic Committee. In 1971, Tucker became the first African-American woman to be appointed as Pennsylvania’s secretary of state. In this position, Tucker established the first Commission on the Status of Women. Four years later, Tucker was appointed as the vice president of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. She was the first African-American woman to hold this position. And in 1976, Tucker became the first black president of the National Federation of Democratic Women. By 1984, Tucker was elected as chair of the Democratic Party’s National Black Caucus. That same year, Tucker returned to her roots as a social activist to work with Shirley Chisolm. Together, the women established the National Congress of Black Women. By 1991, Tucker founded the Bethune-DuBois Institute, Inc. The purpose was to help African-American children develop their cultural awareness through educational programs and scholarships. In addition to establishing organizations to help African-American woman and child, Tucker launched a campaign against rap artists whose lyrics promoted violence and misogyny. Working with conservative politician Bill Bennett, Tucker lobbied companies such as Time Warner Inc. for providing financial support to companies who profited from rap music. Other drugs rise and fall in popularity from generation to generation, but alcohol never really goes out of style. From being worshiped by the ancient Babylonians to being forbidden to teenagers, alcohol has caused many problems. Today, drinking is the drug of choice by teens and causes most wrecks and deaths today. To understand alcohol people must first know the history of alcohol, the effects of teen drinking, and the solutions to teen drinking. Alcohol has been all around the world for centuries and has become a custom of people all over. No one knows for sure who discovered alcohol, but we know how different types of alcohol are made. Just as well, no know knows when alcohol was discovered. There are no records of the discovery or discoverers of alcohol. Although historians do know alcohol was used by primitive people and recorded as early as 10,000 years ago in the Neolithic period and by European civilization(Milgram 22). As early as 5000 B.C., the ancient Babylonians brewed, the process of making beer, their beer in religious temples because it was considered a gift from God. Beer is an alcoholic beverage made by fermentation of cereal grains such as, wheat, rye, corn, or barley; beer contains 3 to 6 percent alcohol. Besides the ancient Babylonians, the ancient Egyptians drank beer. The Egyptians called their beer hek, which was made from barley bread. The bread was crumbled into jars, covered with water, and allowed to ferment. The Egyptian pharaohs blessed this beer in the honor of the goddess of nature, Isis. Egyptians handed out free jugs of beer to peasant workers, and by no surprise drunkenness was a common problem in ancient Egypt (Nielsen 13). The strongest alcohol drinks are called liquors or spirits. An Arabian alchemist named Geber discovered liquor in the eighteenth century A.D. Geber made liquor by distillation, burning away the impurities that formed in wine during fermentation and isolated the remaining liquids. As a result, the concentrated liquid had a higher alcoholic content, which was mainly flavored alcohol and water(Milgram 65). Arnaud de Villanueva discovered liquor in Europe 500 years later, when he made brandy. Arnaud claimed that brandy would cure all humanitys diseases, prolong life, maintain youth, and clear away ill humor. In the 1600s gin, akravit, and whiskey were discovered in many other countries. Then in the 1700s, the Americans invented bourbon. Teenagers rarely think before they do many things. Many times teenagers go to big blowouts or little get togethers with their friends. Their first thought is not about death, their grades, or alcoholism; their main purpose is to get drunk fast and sober up before going home by their set curfews. At parties, teenagers have an average of five or more beers in one night. In the United States teenage drinking has become a major problem, with about 3.3 million teens as problem drinkers. One-fourth of all seventh through twelfth graders admit to drinking at least once a week(Nielson 47). About forty percent of twelfth graders said they had one episode of heavy drinking in the past two weeks. Although no one knows why teens turn to drinking, various studies show that the amount of alcohol changes by their geographical location (Nielsen 47). One major problem with teens and alcohol is death. Many teenagers go to parties and drive home thinking that everything is all right, but twenty- one percent of young drivers involved in fatal crashes have been drinking (MADD 1). On a normal weekend, an average of one teenager dies in a car crash every hour, and nearly fifty percent of these crashes were involved with alcohol. Uses of alcohol and other drugs are associated with the leading causes of death and injury among teenagers and young adults (NCADD 1). Not only do car wrecks kill teenagers, so does compulsive drinking. Alcohol, a depressant on the central nervous system, is detectable when someone begins to have slurred speech, slow reaction time, or staggered walking (Milgram 20). The more a person drinks the higher the risk of having an alcohol over dose. Some signs of an overdose are mental confusion, stupor, coma, seizures, bluish skin color, low body temperature, slow or irregular breathing, and vomiting while sleeping(Al cohol Education Program 4). If these symptoms appear, call 911 for an ambulance, but never leave the victim alone. It is easy for teenagers that live in states bordering Canada or Mexico to bootleg across the border to the United States. By raising the age limits to 21 in Mexico and Canada, it would help cut down on teenage drinking. Everyday teenagers drink, despite the many dangers and ri sks that they are taking every time they drink. Throughout history and probably in the future, alcohol will be the leading drug of choice for teenagers.
